Untitled, July 2020

Over the last week, I’ve started to develop a larger photo project involving long-exposure portraits, and in the interest of executing it correctly, I decided to do a test shoot. I simply used my led light as a key light in front of and above me as well as an orange kicker light just over my left shoulder. Because I wanted some portions of my body blurred while others not, I opted for a 1 second exposure. I kept as still as possible while moving my head or my arm during the shot. A majority of the time, it was a case of perfecting the timing and experiment with how long i stayed still before moving or if I stayed still at all.

During the editing process, I played with different edits and crops to add variety since I didn’t switch up my setup during the photoshoot. For some, I stuck with the magenta hue from my on-set lighting while others I adjusted the colors to change my shirt color to blue and bring the skin-tones closer to its true color. I played with some black-and-white edits as well, which I don’t often tend to gravitate toward, but I loved what the monochrome edits looked like. In the end, I’m in love with what became this self-portrait photo series.
