Emergence

It has been a while since I have done a conceptual photo, let alone a conceptual series, so I decided to pursue another project upon having a brief moment of inspiration. While perusing Tumblr, I came across a simple picture of a hand reaching out from a bush, and it sparked an idea that would become the beginnings of Emergence.

As many of my projects are, the meaning and thoughts behind this series is one of internal struggle. The struggle to pull oneself out of the overgrown. The struggle to emerge from what holds us and suffocates us and to escape into freedom. Whether we fight outright or simply gaze out beyond ourselves, that desperate longing remains.

As I solidified the theme of struggling, the pictures began to take form, sometimes while I was shooting. The original idea - almost a copy of the inspiration photo - was soon left on the wayside (and now an outtake) while stronger visuals that embodied my theme took hold.

And then it was a bunch of post-production work, my favorite part of this entire process.

The resulting series of pictures turned out to be quite intriguing and better than my drawings could ever predict!
