Heat

I thirst from the heat
That suffocates my spirit
Faint from the oppression
That preys upon my will

Stifled by labored breaths
That cling to this husk
Struggling to breathe life
Back in these rusty lungs

I plead for reprieve
For water’s cool taste
To soothe this parched throat
To revive these withering veins

A struggle for strength
Amidst barrenness and waste
A search for escape
To leave this tortured place

Headspace Project, 06

Wildfires are raging across the Pacific Northwest at the time of this writing. The smoke and haze are clouding out the sun, and ash continues to dust our cities. Amidst the disheartening news of many forests' demise (and that of the Columbia River Gorge in particular), I took an hour or so to pull out the camera and take some self-portraits again, processing many emotions, stresses, and frustrations through creation. Paired with a poem I wrote several weeks back, "Heat" is the final result of what is now another entry into my Headspace Project.
