Recluse

As many of us have been dealing with the current pandemic, we’ve found lots of time on our hands. With all my extra time, I’ve taken the opportunity to pursue some creative projects that I have not been able to get to. I recently ordered some new lights, and I wanted to put them to the test with this self-portrait shoot, and this was the result.

I’ve recently been following and inspired by other photographers, namely Linus and his Camera and Jake Wangner, both of which create some fantastic conceptual portraits in studio settings and distinct color palettes. So I ordered some new gear to play with during this quarantine. I got a GVM LS-P80S LED Light, a Savage RGB360 Color Video Light, and miscellaneous colored gels and diffusion paper. I used the GVM light as the key light, diffused and gelled red, and the Savage light as the fill/backlight turned to a light blue. I also used a reflector as needed.

For camera gear, I used my Sony A7S2 with a 35mm prime lens. I played around with the diffusion paper to create the colored “flares” and misty look: holding it up in front of me and draping it over the camera to partially cover the lens. Depending on the setup, the paper caught the light as well, which I liked. In the end, I love how it turned out! I’ve been wanting to play around with colored lights like this, and I’d say it was a success!
